31 Days of Proverbs: Day 5

Day 5, Chapter 5:

I hope your Monday is going well. For many people it’s back to work after Christmas vacation. Take a deep breath and thank the Lord for any break you had recently. No matter if it was a week or one day off; if you had time with your husband and a moment of no cares, that is a blessing. Jumping into chapter 5 reminds me of our motivation Mondays. Solomon is taking a scared straight approach by telling us exactly how ugly life can be, even leading to death, when we lose focus of good and allow immoral influences. He is motivating us to stay on the right path. I read this chapter and thought immediately how I need to stay focused. Everything I allow in my life has a positive or negative effect. Watching certain TV shows, reading certain materials that is filled with gossip, or allowing words from unwise people to fill my ears and causing thoughts I shouldn’t have… these things definitely lead to a negative effect in my marriage, my relationship with God, and in my life. This warning against the immoral woman can be literal, but it is also metaphoric to the many distractions in this world. “She” this immoral woman, is a metaphor for anything worldly that can entice us to do wrong and cause us to stray from God. Many things can seem innocent, like going to lunch with a male friend alone, receiving compliments too often from the same man, or going to events often without your spouse. But these things that can be “nothing”, can easily turn into something if not careful. It is wise for us to stay connected with God and listen to sermons on relationships, go to marriage seminars or marriage conferences every now and then. They will educate us on the real life dangers to our marriages and how to help protect ourselves. Verse 9 & 10 “If you do, you will lose your honor and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved. Strangers will consume your wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.” Your marriage is a blessing and many would like to see it fail. Not because of who they are, but because of the evil in this world. Ephesians 6:12 “We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world.” Let’s remember that warnings are good. They teach us and advise us. We shouldn’t see this chapter as overly paranoid and think it was for back then. How many of us know couples who are divorced? How many of us know single people that would love to be married? How many of us know those who have unfortunately, lost a loved one to sin and temptation? It is real and it is current. We must always be alert, seeking God, and fight the good fight.

Father God, thank you for your word. Thank you for our marriages and the ability to fight against evil, due to your son Jesus who made it possible. I want to lift up every couple today and pray that their marriage be protected against harm and those seeking to do harm intentionally. In Jesus name, Amen. “He will dies for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.” Proverbs 5:23 NLT
